An Ontario justice said wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat in court was a “lapse in judgment.”
Judge Bernd Zabel issued an apology in court on Tuesday according to Hamilton TV station CHCH.
Zabel said it was “attempt to mark a moment in history by humour” and that he had no intention of making a political statement.
Hamilton City Councillor Matthew Green has called for Zabel’s removal as a judge, saying the move was “in incredibly poor taste and judgement while presiding in court” and showed “bias that both disrespects and discredits the entire legal system [calling] into question the impartiality of judgments made by this particular person”.
N.D.P leader Andrea Horwath has also suggested the judge should step aside saying, “It’s a complete lack of judgment.”
Zabel appeared in a Hamilton courthouse after the U.S. election with the embroidered red hat which carried the iconic message that was a rallying cry for Republican Donald Trump’s run for president.
