The RCMP provided an apology and announced a settlement for two sexual harassment cases dating back as far as 1974.
Commissioner Bob Paulson stepped to the podium for a news conference in Ottawa on Thursday and offered atonement for hundreds of current and former female officers for alleged bullying, discrimination, and harassment incidents over a number of years.
The move will put an end to potential class action lawsuits from former officers Janet Merlo and Linda Davidson. The two will receive an undisclosed settlement in addition to the apology.
Hundreds of former female officers and civilian members have claimed to be victims of harassment over the years dating back to a time when women first were able to join the force.
Both Merlo and Davidson thanked the RCMP and Paulson for identifying the problem and say their actions were to promote a safer workplace for other women.
