A Toronto police officer will not face criminal charges in the death of a 34 year old man who fell to his death from an apartment balcony in 2015.
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has determined that the officers actions did not contribute to the man’s death in the morning hours of December 1, 2015.
A report says two officers were called out to an apartment complex near Highway 427 and Burnhamthorpe Road after receiving a call regarding a domestic dispute in which a female resident allegedly was assaulted by a man.
When no one answered the officer’s knocks, the building concierge unlocked the door, leading to the discovery of a woman bleeding and in distress. Moments later after a quick search, officers discovered the man’s body on the 2nd floor terrace of the parking garage below the unit’s balcony.
Paramedics and firefighters attended the scene. The man was pronounced dead a short time later from multiple trauma consistent with a fall.
The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
