Parks Canada has confirmed the identity of a wreck discovered off the shores of King William Island in Nunavut.
The ship in question is in fact the HMS Terror as previously believed by underwater archeologists.
The Terror went down over 160 years ago while searching for the Northwest Passage. In 1845, explorer Sir John Franklin set sail from England with two ships, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror across Canada’s Arctic. The ships and crews vanished.
A breakthrough was made in September 2014 when an expedition led by Parks Canada discovered the wreck of HMS Erebus. This discovery lead to the creation of the Wrecks of HMS Erebus and HMS Terror National Historic Site of Canada.
The discovery was made thanks to a long-term partnership with northern communities, Parks Canada, the Canadian Coast Guard, the Royal Canadian Navy, Environment and Climate Change Canada, among others.
One of the tips that helped find the wreckage was an Inuit hunter who remembered seeing a mast on sea ice nearly seven years ago.
