Miss Cleo, the psychic that dominated late night TV in the 90s with her iconic infomercials, has died of cancer at the age of 53.
Youree Dell Harris passed away Tuesday in Palm Beach, Florida.
The actress took on the role of Miss Cleo in the late 90s after being hired by the Psychic Readers Network, and promoted free readings through various commercials that usually ended with the line “Call me now!”
As it turned out, those readings were anything but free!
When viewers called the advertised toll-free number, they were then guided towards a 1-900 number that hit callers with a $4.99 per minute charge. According to the Federal Trade Commission, these calls cost 6 million people about $1-billion. A 2002 settlement saw the Psychic Readers Network wave $500-million of those charges.
Harris disappeared following the settlement, although she resurfaced to lend her voice to a character in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and joined the gay rights movement after coming out as a lesbian.
