The Catholic Church of Montreal will be banning priests and other church workers from being alone with children. This will include needing parents to accompany children during confession.
The pilot project starts in the fall, including 10 parishes and it’s looking to extend to 194 parishes. It is described to be a preventative measure, to allow the public to gain a confidence in the church. In the Archbishop’s decree, he wrote the ban will come into place to “ensure the safety and integrity of the people to whom we bring the Gospel message and offer our pastoral care” as well as “to preserve the integrity, security and good reputation of God’s people”.
