Led Zeppelin members Jimmy Page and Robert Plant were in a Los Angeles courtroom today.
The band is in the midst of a lawsuit that claims it stole the opening riff of Stairway To Heaven (1971) from the band Spirit’s 1968 song, Taurus. A judge approved the case in April, citing that there was substantial similarities between the two songs. A lawyer representing late Spirit guitarist Randy Wolfe says both bands were on the same bill in the 1960s, and that Led Zeppelin wrote Stairway To Heaven after hearing Spirit play Taurus. Page, 72 and Plant, 67, say they were in a cottage in Wales when they wrote Stairway, and weren’t influenced at all by Wolfe’s chord progression.
Stairway To Heaven has apparently earned over half a billion dollars as of 2008.
