Project Claudia was put into action in Toronto yesterday, resulting in at least 45 medical marijuana dispensaries being shut down and emptied by Toronto Police and the drug squad.
On Wednesday, 78 property owners out of a known 83 dispensaries in the city were handed a notice stating out that their businesses were in violation of current zoning bylaws.
An unknown number of dispensary employees were led out of their establishments in handcuffs in places like Kensington Market, The Danforth, and Queen Street West.
Many dispensary staff members, like Eden Medicinal Society consultant Michael McLellan, argue that they only ever served pot to licensed patients, unlike other establishments.
“Employees were placed in handcuffs and detained,” he said. “We don’t know anything more about that at this time.”
In response to the raids, Toronto Councillor Jim Karygiannis declared that he was “appalled that this is happening. Cracking down on people and closing them is not the way we need to go.”
