A showdown is expected between tokers and city staffers on the Licensing and Standards Committee later in June.
Marijuana activists were planning to show up at Thursday’s meeting to voice their concerns over mayor John Tory’s move to crack down on the growing number of pot shops across the city, however, that has been deferred to the end of next month.
Earlier this week, some dispensary owners received letters from the city that say they’re operating in violation of bylaws.
“Joseph”, who owns a dispensary in Scarborough tells AM640’s John Oakley Show a lot of the dispensaries will fight back. “What we do is provide a service of a lot of medical patients who are not happy with the (cannabis) that they’re being prescribed.”
He went on to accuse the city of using scare tactics.
“They harass and scared our landlord, telling her that if she doesn’t make the stop close immediately, she will be handed a $50,000 fine.”
Many owners are concerned city officials are trying to criminalize a set of bylaws, shutting down scores of businesses by handing out hefty fines.
