With more money being thrown at the VIA Rail while ridership levels continue to sink, is it time to privatize VIA Rail?
The National Post’s Jesse Klein suggested here that now is the time to take a different track on the service.
In 2014 the federal government handed VIA $55 million, which amounts to a subsidy of $591 per passenger, or one economy ticket for travel between Toronto and the West Coast.
The Auditor General reports that ridership levels have dropped gradually from 4.1 million in 2010, to 3.8 million in 2014.
VIA also struggles to keep their trains on schedule.
Is VIA Rail still a central component to Canada’s transportation network, or has it merely become a ‘bucket list’ experience for most Canadians and tourists? Should it be completely privatized?
