A Mississauga daycare operator has been sentenced to 5 years 11 months in prison for shaking an infant to death.
39 year old April Luckese was convicted of manslaughter in March for killing 14-month-old Duy-An Nguyen in January of 2011.
During sentencing Superior Court Justice Gordon Lemon expressed sympathy for the mother of two, calling her an otherwise “good person who has done a bad thing.”
The Crown at Luckese’s trial argued the daycare provider lost her patience with the child and intentionally hit the child’s head on a hard surface, likely the floor.
The child died of severe head trauma and had a fractured skull and swelling and bleeding on her brain.
Luckese ran an unlicensed daycare business out of her Mississauga home.
Luckese initially told police after the incident that she tripped while carrying Duy-An and that the child struck her head on the banister. She later recanted and said she had shaken the child.
