In November of 2015, Premier Kathleen Wynne accused Canadians who have concerns about the security screening of Syrian refugees as ‘closet racists’ using this security issue to speak their bigotry openly. Her quote: “what we can’t give in to, I think, is allowing security to mask racism. That’s the danger and that somehow talking about security allows us to tap into that racist vein, when that isn’t who we are.” Wynne was joined by Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard who added “we have those two devils within our society: racism and xenophobia. They exist.”
Polls show a majority of Canadians expressed concerns about security the federal government had in place in its rush to bring 25,000 Syrian refugees here. So a politician is accusing a majority of Canadians of being racists and masking their racism? Who does Kathleen Wynne think she is?
