Federal Immigration Minister John McCallum congratulated everyone yesterday involved with moving 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada.
“We are not having a massive celebration about this, because it’s only a victory for Phase 1,” the minister said at Toronto Pearson International Airport Monday.
The government will now turn their attention to “Phase 2” of their plan, which aims to settle the refugees in permanent living arrangements, connect them with jobs, and get them enrolled into either French or English language training.
The total cost of the refugee program has been tallied at $700 million so far. McCallum claims that they are under the budget that was previously set. However, he admitted that additional funds will be needed to cover the cost of language training.
