On January 1st, SunTech Greenhouses decided to ban all personal cellphone in the workplace because it affects productivity. The ban came to be after superviser Amanda Chiasson kept catching workers hiding among the tomato plants to text. Now, if an employee steps inside the doors of the four acre greenhouse, their cellphones cannot. A “No Cellphones? sign is posted outside the doors. SunTech owner Bob Mitchell says: “Productivity; it all comes down to productivity”.
Cellphone use in the workplace has 55% of Canadian businesses concerned for productivity. Businesses are trying to figure out ways to get their employees to focus on their work, not their phones. A Canadian Federation of Independent Business survey showed that the top challenge in workplace productivity was cellphone use, then it was excessive chatting or gossiping.
Since January, the ban has made a difference. Mitchell says, “we got more positive feedback, even from some of the worst offenders. “Good for you, Bob”, they say”.
Should businesses ban the use of cellphones? What if your workplace did? Is it fair?
