31-year-old Lex McCallister, known as a contestant in the reality TV show The Bachelor, has died in an apparent suicide. According to her sister-in-law, McCallister took a ‘combination of two different prescription medications, and Tylenol and Aspirin’.
She joins a list of reality stars who have ended their own lives, and is also the second contestant to have taken her own life in the same season. Gia Allemand, 29, committed suicide in 2013. The suicide rates of reality stars are significantly higher than the average suicide rate in North America.
What should reality TV do about this disturbing trend? Are they doing all they can for these people? Should reality TV be hazardous to your health? Does this change your mind with reality TV?
Psychologist Dr. Oren Amitay sheds some light on the issue.
