According to deputy chief Peter Sloly, most police officers who serve Toronto – between 80-85% – do not live in the city. They commute from suburbs like Burlington or Ajax, where life is significantly different compared to the concrete jungle. A major reason as to why they don’t live in Toronto is the cost.
Mariana Valverde, a criminologist at the University of Toronto, said: “Where you live and what you think of a good place to live, does have a bearing on how you do your job as a police officer […] We care more about people who live like us . . . it’s basic psychology”.
