Two major national and international trials involving sexual assault and violence toward women have been in the spotlight this week: that of Jian Ghomeshi, and Bill Cosby. Also, Daryush Roosh V Valizedah and his misogynist followers on the Return of the Kings (they argue rape should be legalized) website were planning a 40 nation public gathering, including Canadian cities. Mayors of Ottawa, Calgary, Toronto, Edmonton have condemned Roosh V.
Ghomeshi faces counts of sexual assault and overcoming resistance by choking. The trial is marked by tough cross examination of complainants by Ghomeshi’s lawyer Marie Henein. Actress Lucy DeCoutere was presented with emails she had written to Ghomeshi after his alleged physical attack on her. One email ends with “I love your hands”.
How does a former prosecutor and now criminal defense lawyer view the trial so far? The performance of the defense, the prosecution and where the case may be headed?
A Pennsylvania judge has ruled Bill Cosby must go to trial on connection with a 2004 sex assault on Toronto resident Andrea Constad. Cosby has also been ordered to present himself for a second deposition in the alleged sexual misconduct complaint by then 15 year old Judy Huth, who alleges Cosby took her to the Playboy Mansion, where he then sexually attacked her.
