A woman, known only as Jane Doe, has been awarded $100,000 plus costs in Canada’s first civil case involving revenge porn.
Doe’s on-again-off-again boyfriend sent her erotic images and videos of himself, and demanded she do the same.
In November 2011, she relented and sent him a video of herself. Almost immediately the video was posted on the popular porn site pornhub.com, titled “college girl pleasures herself for ex-boyfriends delight.”
When she went to police, they told her that couldn’t press charges, but did direct her to launch a civil case.
Jane Doe’s lawyer, Donna Wilson, said, “there are few things in life that are more private than a sex video.”
Her ex-boyfriend did not defend himself in court.
Justice David G. Stinson ruled in her favour, awarding her the amount that she herself had selected: $100,000. Additional costs bring the total to $141,708.03.
According to Wilson, the man has agreed to pay $1,000 a month, meaning it will take him about 12 years or so to pay off the bill entirely.
Do you agree with the judge’s decision in this case? Does Jane Doe deserve some of the blame in this story, considering she was the one who decided to share such a personal experience?
