A pair of salsa dancers from the GTA are the world’s best after winning a major international competition for the second time, but the road to victory had one major obstacle – a broken neck!
Roberto Quaresma and Daria Novoselova won the World Latin Dance Cup for the first time in 2014 and were invited to perform at last summer’s Pan Am Games in Toronto.
While rehearsing for that performance, Quaresma fell on top of Novoselova, who ended up with a broken neck. Novoselova was incredibly lucky as she could have been paralyzed from the miss step. Luckily, surgery and rest were able to repair the almost career ending injury.
Meanwhile, Quaresma stopped dancing entirely.
The pair missed their Pan Am performance, but picked up where they left off as soon as Novoselova’s neck brace came off. They rehabbed, they trained and they travelled to Miami to the World Championship in December of 2015 and they WON!
Daria and Roberto join us in studio to discuss triumph over tumbling.
