The force has certainly awakened, as studios say the latest installment to the Star Wars franchise raked in $247 million over the weekend, making it the biggest North American debut of all time.
Walt Disney says it destroyed the previous opening record set by Jurrasic World.
According to CNN, the film brought in $528 million internationally.
The film also beat the Canadian record for best opening weekend previously held by Marvel’s The Avengers. The current ranking of the top 3 best opening weekends of all time in Canada are Star Wars: The Force Awakens (projected at $17.1MM), followed by Marvel’s The Avengers ($15.6MM) and Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron ($13.8 MM) in third place.
“Our sole focus has been creating a film that delivers that one-of-a-kind Star Wars experience, and director J.J. Abrams, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, and the Lucasfilm team have outdone themselves,” Alan Horn, Chairman, The Walt Disney Studios told reporters, “To all of the fans around the world who not only came out in Force to make this such an exciting and astronomical debut but who treated this film as their own and helped preserve the experience for their fellow fans by not spoiling it — thank you, we do.”
71 percent of the audience were adults, with teens making up only 9 percent, but more statistics will be coming in as the holidays kick in.
