There’s never a good time to lose your job, but a layoff… at CHRISTMAS?!?
On Friday, CHCH TV in Hamilton cancelled its Friday evening newscast before revealing that the outlet, one of only two independent TV stations left in Canada, would be experiencing major cutbacks.
The union representing CHCH employees confirmed that around 100 jobs have been cut, and the company that provided news content for the station declared bankruptcy.
Those employees who haven’t been laid off will now be employed by the trustee of the company, but without union representation and protection.
Reasons for the restructuring include a cut in subsidies from the government, the declining interest in television programming, and a decline in national advertisers. Local news will be cut by more than 2/3.
Over they years, CHCH brought Ontario residents and Canadians original shows like The Hilarious House of Frightenstein, Party Game, Smith and Smith and The Red Green Show.
Do you think Channel Zero Inc., the company that bought CHCH back in 2009, should have waited until the new year to fire its employees? Is it better to lay people off BEFORE or AFTER Christmas?
Here is the official announcement that Channel Zero CEO Romen Podzyhun made on CHCH Friday: http://f980bc17d352e4b134c9-c2dae4aa19eccb82beedc616a8db3af0.r76.cf2.rackcdn.com/CHCH_STATEMENT_GENERIC.mp4
