Animal control authorities are concerned about rabies after a fight between a dog and an aggressive raccoon in the back of a control van has led to the discovery.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency say it’s the first documented case since 2006 in Ontario.
On Wednesday, the two bull mastifs were picked up by authorities after breaking free from their owners property. Along for the ride in the van was the raccoon which broke out of it`s cage at one point leading to one of the dogs breaking free as well. After the scuffle, vets treated cuts on the dogs and made the rabies discovery.
The raccoon was euthanized, while the future of the two dogs is up in the air.
Hamilton officials working to make the public aware and uging contact with authorities should anyone see “distemperament” in wildlife.
The city has begun a review of animal service protocols in light of the discovery.
