The federal Conservatives and NDP are calling Prime Minister Justin Trudeau a hypocrite over the “Nanny Gate” that has become a major talking point in the country this week.
During the recent election campaign, Trudeau went after the Conservatives’ tax cuts and benefits for Canada’s wealthiest families.
He claimed that his family received $3,000 from the Universal Child Care Benefit “even though we’re doing very well and didn’t need it,” he told Chatelaine magazine a few months ago. He told the public that he would cut a cheque for that amount to a charity.
Now it has been revealed that his family has hired TWO nannies for their three kids. And the taxpayers are covering the bill!
The Prime Minister earns a salary of $334,800 a year. Considering the PM’s two homes, food, transportation, drivers, cleaners, maintenance and hydro are all covered off by taxpayers, shouldn’t the country’s leader be able to cover the cost of his personal childcare?
A spokesperson for Trudeau said these nannies are in fact “special assistants”, paid $15-20/hour during the day and $11-13/hour at night, and sometimes find themselves tasked with tending to Trudeau’s offspring.
Conservatives are calling out Trudeau for being a hypocrite. But Liberal supporters remind us that the Conservatives are not immune from this hypocrisy!
Back in the 80’s Progressive Conservative Prime Minister Brian Mulroney hired a taxpayer funded nanny for his four kids. During his 1984 election campaign, Mulroney was asked if he would charge taxpayers for a nanny like Pierre Trudeau had done. He said that “it seems to me there are a number of things symbolically like that that have to be changed,” Mulroney responded, “that if you’re going to ask other people to make sacrifices and to join you, then you have to provide the leadership—that’s one area.”
Well, what happened 30 years ago has happened again!
Does it bother you that the Prime Minister is allowed to hire nannies using taxpayer money? Are you angrier with Justin Trudeau’s hypocrisy (even though other politicians are guilty of the same hypocrisy)?
If the government pays for Trudeau’s nannies, shouldn’t it pay for ours as well?
