Turkey has poked the Russian bear.
Reports indicate that the Turkish military shot down a Russian warplane near the Syrian border Tuesday after repeated warnings about that the Su-24 had violated Turkish airspace.
Russia, however, argues that the jet never left Syrian air space. The Kremlin has branded this a “very serious incident”.
“We are looking into the circumstances of the crash of the Russian jet,” Russia’s Defence Ministry said. “The Ministry of Defence would like to stress that the plane was over the Syrian territory throughout the flight.”
While Russia says the jet was downed by artillery fire, Turkey claims that two of their F16s intercepted the plane.
Pilots did evacuate the downed warplane using parachutes. There are reports that one pilot is dead. The second video below allegedly shows Syrian rebels surrounding the body.
NATO is holding an emergency council meeting at Turkey’s request to deal with this situation.
Russian president Vladimir Putin has called this a “stab in the back by the accomplices of terrorism.”
