There are men and women who dedicate their entire lives to trying to scam you out of your hard-earned money, and they are constantly trying to find different ways to score some of that cash.
The latest one to pop up is the CRA Scam.
Threatening calls are made from phony tax collectors claiming to be with the Canada Revenue Agency. Versions tailored to Austrlia, Britain and the United States have become popular as well. The fraudsters turn abusive if you question their identity.
The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre claims that the average victim loses $1,500 to $4,500. In 2014, fake CRA calls sparked 1,251 complaints. This year has already seen 6,000 complaints and a reported loss of up to $800,000 in total!
The Toronto Star’s Ellen Roseman writes about the details of the scam HERE.
Another one gaining popularity, as reported by the Ottawa Citizen HERE, is the “Hitman Scam”!
Citizens are being hit with texts and emails claiming to be from a “hitman” who has been hired by one of their friends to kill them. This hitman, however, has decided to spare the life of their target but only if a fee is paid immediately.
The police are asking victims to contact them with any information on either one of these scams.
