On Friday, Leaside residents woke up to find a former Sleep Country store on Bayview Ave. covered in construction hoarding. A sign announced the privately funded Jefferson Homeless Shelter would open on November 1st. Many residents in the wealthy Toronto neighbourhood were upset and even tears were shed over the idea of having a homeless shelter in their own backyards.
On Saturday, another sign was posted on the building, “You told us you don’t want a shelter here. Neither do we. Support us in creating long-term solutions. Let’s end homelessness,” it said, and gave a link to Raising the Roof’s website. Several cameras hidden around the area captured residents’ reactions to the idea of a having a homeless shelter in their area, and those reactions will be used in a film that will be released on Oct 12.
Do you feel as though the message was well represented or do you think people are annoyed over the stunt?
