When asked about the Conservative Party’s opposition to marijuana legalization, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said, “Tobacco is a product that does a lot of damage. Marijuana is infinitely worse.” The statistics do not support his claim. Tobacco’s health effects cause 37, 000 deaths in Canada a year, a total of seventeen percent of all deaths in the country. Marijuana on the other hand, has never been conclusively linked to any deaths from direct health effects. Even the scientific evidence on whether pot causes lung damage is mixed.
Should Harper retract the statement? Does this make you question his other statements?
