The Conservatives are promising, if re-elected this fall, to create a new RCMP tip line that would be dedicated to reports of Canadians suspected of taking part in “barbaric cultural practices”.
Conservative candidates Chris Alexander and Kellie Leitch indicated during Friday’s announcement that these practices include sexual slavery.
The tip line would cost an estimated $1.5 million per year.
The Conservative Party has noted that “Although polygamy, early and forced marriage, and female genital mutilation are illegal in Canada, we know these crimes take place here,” and that Prime Minister Stephen Harper is “not afraid to defend Canadian values, and to protect women from these heinous crimes.
While some may applaud this promise, statistics on the RCMP’s National Security Tip Line, currently in operation, indicate that it may be a waste of time and money.
The National Post has obtained records on the tip line dating from 2012 to 2014. Of more than 3,000 calls to said line, 92% were classified as “non-sensical”, and were of no help to authorities.
Do you think a tip line like the one suggested is necessary? Are the Conservatives wasting their time with this?
