Friends of Marco Muzzo and his family told John Oakley yesterday that the 29-year-old charged with impaired driving causing death following a crash in Vaughan is a ‘good kid’ who just screwed up.
Marco is alleged to have blown over twice the legal limit following the accident.
Court records show that he has had run-ins with the law in the past in 6 different jurisdictions in the GTA, but only regarding provincial offences, nothing criminal. Muzzo paid a fine in 2012 for being intoxicated in a public place in Richmond Hill, and he paid a 2013 speeding ticket acquired while in Newmarket. He was also handed a ticket this year for use of a cellphone.
Marco, who was planning to be married in October, is a member of the wealthy and influential Muzzo family. His grandfather, who also went by the name of Marco, was a real estate magnate who passed in 2005. The elder Marco headed the development company Pemberton Group. Younger Marco is reported to be the director of Marel Contractors in Vaughan.
On Sunday afternoon, Muzzo was alleged to have driven past a stop sign without stopping at the intersection of Kirby Road and Kipling Avenue in Vaughan, where he collided with a minivan carrying multiple members of the Neville-Lake family. He was alleged to have just returned from his stag party in Las Vegas.
3 children under the age of 10 – Daniel, Harry, and Millie – perished as a result of the crash (Harry and Millie were taken off life support after the crash), as did their grandfather, 65-year-old Gary Neville. The childrens’ grandmother and great-grandmother were injured, but are in stable condition and expected to survive.
What did Muzzo’s lawyer, Rudi Covre, say to reporters outside a courtroom in Newmarket yesterday?
“I’m not going to tell you what he said to me. It’s a tough go right now for him, as I’m sure you can appreciate.”
Covre added that it was a “tragic, tragic event for all families involved.”
Do you agree with his lawyer, that this is as tough a situation for Marco as it is for the family of the deceased? Do you sympathize with family and friends who have indicated to Oakley that Marco is a ‘good kid’ who happened to do something bad? Do you have a friend or family member with a good heart who unexpectedly ended up doing something wrong?
