A city committee has voted against recommendations that would allow Uber to be operate legally in Toronto.
Tensions were high as the taxi industry and Uber went head to head at the Municipal Licensing and Standards committee meeting today.
Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti, arrived to the meeting wearing a black arm band to signify what he called the death of the taxi industry.
The committee voted against the Uber recommendations 4-1.
They did vote in favour of lowering cab fares by $1 plus 10 per cent and tightening existing bylaws for strict enforcement against Uber.
The committee’s decisions still need approval from council.
