As housing prices have gone up, rental prices have gone up. Now one in five renters are facing a housing crisis. According to a recent survey one in five renters are spending more than half their income on shelter costs. Housing advocates say that spending that much of your income on rent puts them in a high risk of becoming homeless. Across the country almost 40% of renters spend more than 30% of their income on rent and utilities. Even spending 30% of your income on rent, housing costs can become unaffordable very quickly.
