Oakville’s mayor, Rob Burton, is in hot water over a tweet he made when making a comparison between Prime Minister Harper’s campaign security teams and militants who served under Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini during the Nazis and National Fascist Party regimes.
Burton says it wasn’t his intention to target veterans, but his remarks did lead to Canada’s Minister of Defence Jason Kenney to ask the mayor to issue an apology.
The apology was made towards the veterans, but not the Harper Conservatives.
I apologize to all vets for my remarks. I regret any impact on their feelings or pride. I celebrate the way they went to fight for freedom.
