Around 100 people gathered on Saturday protesting an event in Toronto hosted by blogger Roosh V.
Ahead of his performance, Mayor John Tory and City Coun. Norm Kelly were among those who called his views unwelcome in Toronto.
Saturday’s rally was organized by MPP Cheri DiNovo. “There is a bigger message here too that is not just Roosh V, and that is clearly hate speech,” says DiNovo.
“We have had some legal opinions who have weighed in on this and if he does speak and he does utter the same kind of things he’s put on his blogs and his books and online – that rape should be legalized, that he has gloated about being a rapist and is proud of that fact – if he comes out with things like that, then that is hate speech and we’ve alerted police and he should be charged.”
Roosh V, whose real name is Daryush Valizadeh, has attracted international outrage – and support – online. The self proclaimed “pick up artist” has vocally advocated for the legalization of rape on private property, and once suggested men seek out women who suffer from an eating disorder. He has also in the past spoke out about why “Toronto Is The Worst City In North America For Men,” citing ” Too many Asian and Indian girls” as one reason.
Despite a number of venue changes, Valizadeh says his lecture will go on as planned.
