Over the long weekend, the Conservatives are expected to make an announcement on what would be the longest election campaign in Canadian history.
The call would stop third party attack ads and will strengthen the Conservatives war chest. If the federal election is called early, it appears taxpayers will be on the hook to pay for it.
Millions of dollars would be needed to cover extra administrative costs, as well as rebates to parties and candidates.
Election Canada figures a price tage of $375 million if the campaign lasts only 37 days.
