Despite an earlier report that Prime Minister Stephen Harper would be abolishing the Senate, our leader has instead opted for death by attrition.
Speaking in Saskatchewan on Friday, the PM said that his administration will no longer be appointing any further senators. Harper adds that he believes it’s up to the provinces to agree on a plan for Senate reform.
The Supreme Court of Canada has ruled that reforming the chamber would require a constitutional amendment with 7 provinces in accordance along with 50% of the population.
NDP Leader Tom Mulcair, an outspoken proponent against the scandal ridden chamber, had this to say when it was rumoured Harper would be abolishing.
