One of Rob Ford's greatest allies is steping down from the mayor's inner circle.

Giorgio Mammoliti is resigning from the city's executive committee.

Mammoliti says his resignation is not him abandoning Ford's cause, but rather frees him up to focus on his job as a councillor over the coming months.

He says the decision was fortified shortly after Ford's guilty verdict, when his constituents called him advising him to distance himself from the mayor.

When asked if he would make a run for the mayor's seat, Mammoliti says it is a possibility.
