2-year-old boy dead after vehicle slams into restaurant patio in south Edmonton
3 am
Edmonton police believe the driver of an SUV was drunk when his vehicle plowed into a crowded restaurant patio. It slammed into a family eating dinner Sunday night, killing a small child. Police say the vehicle pinned the 2-year-old boy to a nearby wall at Ric's Grill in Terwillegar around 7:45pm. He was rushed to hospital where medical staff did their best to revive him. But Staff Sergeant Steven Shwok was soon confirming the worst. “I can confirm that for you - - that we have a child that passed away as a result of this collision,” remarked Shwok. The father of the little boy and his 1-year-old brother were treated for minor injuries, while the mother was not physically harmed. Charges are now pending against the 62-year-old man driving the SUV, with alcohol believed to have been a factor in the case. And the EPS's Scott Pattison says they have plenty of witnesses with “an entire patio of patrons there.” (td)

City reminding that permits are needed for outdoor home improvement projects
9:51 pm
This time of year can be a very popular time for home improvement projects. But before you start building a shed or a deck in your backyard, you need to make sure you acquire the proper permits. Paul Kozak is senior planner with the city's planning branch. He tells Edmonton This Week, which airs Saturday’s on 630CHED, what some of the specifications are when it comes to building something like a fence. “You need to start with a site plan that shows the location of the buildings on the property and where you’re proposing to build this fence. The site plan should also show where your property lines are because the fence needs to be constructed entirely within private property.” Kozak says when it comes to a deck, you would also need a site plan showing the location of the deck, and also you would need to bring in some drawings showing how the deck will be constructed. He says permits allow the city to manage what get's developed, and where, and so that everything that gets developed is safe. You can contract the planning branch by phoning Edmonton’s 311 service.  (bu)
