Blood On The Tracks

Earlier this week, a freak accident occurred. A cyclist got his bike wheel stuck in streetcar tracks, which caused him to fall. When he did fall, he hit his head and subsequently died. For this fellow and his family, it is a tragedy.

Now some councillors are all hopped up and wish to make streetcar tracks ‘safer’. Is this a bit of an overreaction? Yes streetcars are antiquated and should have been mothballed decades ago but cycling in the city comes with many hazards from ignorant drivers to bad pedestrians, to yes, streetcar tracks.

There are 3.5km of decommissioned tracks that could go relatively immediately. Naturally, it makes more fiscal sense to wait until the road is slated for resurfacing to remove those decommissioned tracks.
