Must The Goodwill End?
Posted 1/2/2013 8:45:00 AM

John Oakley returns Monday, January 7th, 2013. In the meantime...

Less than twenty-four hours into the new year and the GTA already has a dirtbag.

The driver of a Hummer involved in a car accident on the 401 is now the subject of a search. The accident occurred on the westbound 401 and has taken the life of a seven year old boy.

The vehicle has been found, the driver remains unknown.

Over the holiday season when we tend to be nicer to each other and preach goodwill to all men, it’s awful to see something like this on the first day of the year. How quickly we forget our own advice from just a few days ago.

It says in the Bible that we are to even love our enemies. It goes against human nature to do that. As part of our nature, we tend to just think about ourselves, but need to think about others and treat them the way we want to be treated. Some people do this, but a lot of people don't. :)

I don't think people are nicer during the end-of-year holidays. Not that I've noticed anyway. The message of Christmas is goodwill to all men but it is not intended to apply just to gift-giving in December.

Who knows why the Hummer driver ran. Perhaps s/he was illegal. Or knew there was a warrant for his/her arrest. Drunk? Stoned out of his/her mind? Panic, guilt?

Most of us don't forget to practice/preach good will to all but we fall short. Still, it can be discouraging, that's agreed.

This time of year is often accompanied by melancholy that John Lennon's song summed up:

    "So this is Christmas
    And what have you done
    Another year over
And a new one just begun"

Happy New Year, Insiders. Let's make it a good one!

So much for the Christmas Spirit and Goodwill to all men.
This truly tragic death of a young boy has devastated the family along with many others whether they know these people personally, or not. It could have happened to any one of us driving the 401 and my heart goes out to the boys loved ones. Since the cowardly, hit & run driver did not bother to stop, then ditched the murder weapon (hummers are built like "tanks") and the dirtbag has still not come forward to own up to the crime, s/he hasn't demonstrated any goodwill towards the victims at all. I don't feel inclined to forgive the person responsible for this "accident", unless & until there is some ownership here. I'd like to see people in the GTA come together to report any & all possible evidence, to bring this driver to justice and give the family even a little bit of closure. I hope that anyone who even slightly suspects who could have done this, will come forward with the information... because it's the morally decent & right thing to do.
