Is It Safe Or Not?
Posted 12/12/2012 9:11:00 AM

Conflicting reports have surfaced on the state and safety of the Gardiner Expressway.

Some claim it is bound to crumble completely while others claim the falling concrete we’ve witnessed has only been ‘superficial’ decay.

This artery services over one hundred thousand vehicles on a daily basis. And sadly, at the moment, it is one of two options for coming into the downtown core from the west.

There is little doubt that the Gardiner is nearing the end of its life cycle. As a user, which would you prefer: to repair/rebuild the road in sections; or should we undertake a ‘Big Dig’ and bury it, much like Boston has done?

    Of course it's not safe.

They have better roads in Croatia.

It would be a shame if someone actually died from the falling concrete.
I'd like to see it totally rebuilt, maybe underground.
I wonder if they can build a new expressway underground while still keeping the current road open.
In any event, it's going to cost a lot of money to replace this thing, but it would be a good investment.

It's too important to shut down for the time it would take to rebuild.
Run the new XPressway out in the Lake from the 427 to Yonge with 4 or 5 arteries to get back on land.
Build it and then tear the old one down and create Parks and other features to make the City attractive.

Like the poster John stated, this artery is too important to be shut down for any length of time, or even for just one day. John P. has a good solution and there may be other good ideas. Also, if GO Transit was expanded, maybe more people would use it, rather than drive their cars into Toronto for work. Of course, that won't take all people off the roads, but it might help a bit to lessen congestion in the future.

Some good ideas here. I say bury it but that may be too costly as has been argued. The one solution that is not tenable is to do nothing.

I would suggest that council stop procrastinating and DITHERING and tear down this unmaintained expressway BEFORE it falls down and KILLS people!!! If we do NOTHING, it most definitely WILL COST LIVES and MORE MONEY with the lawsuits that will follow. Let's cut our losses NOW, and rebuild with the FUTURE in mind this time.

Council includes the mayor, by the way.
