City Council Term Limits?
Posted 11/1/2012 9:15:00 AM

City Councillor Doug Ford is proposing term limits down at City Hall. There are ‘too many dinosaurs’ on both sides says the Councillor for Ward 2.

Ford thinks fresh bodies and minds should be the order of the day and that that might keep the ideas flowing.

Let’s face it, some Councillors have been prone to stagnation the longer they linger.

Ford also believes it should apply to all members of council including his brother, Mayor Rob.

There is a certain difficulty in getting a group of people together to vote for their own obsolescence so this push by Councillor Ford may not go too far.

Do you think there should be term limits for city council?

True, these career politicians won't string themselves up. However, here's an even better idea they just might vote for, if only to deflect the focus from their own corruption. Let's limit the term of civil servants, especially civil servant executives. It is now officially acknowledged (thanks Ben Soave and the Charbonneau-protected witnesses) that the mob is active in Ontario especially at the municipal level. And it is not most active in elected leaders but in career civil servants, especially executives. If we limit the term of civil servants -- and to attract good ones, we might need to offer a nice incentive (but only if they work full-time and not to rule) -- we can shake up mob influence -- not stop it completely, corruption being the natural state towards which all matter tends -- but destabilize and reduce its influence.
