What A Garbage Start
Posted 8/8/2012 9:39:00 AM

Private garbage collection in Toronto got off to a slow start yesterday. Citing the learning of new routes as a reason for the delay, some people didn’t have their trash collected until well into Tuesday evening.

A representative for the private company has stated that it can take up to six weeks to work the kinks out of a new route. While it’s understandable that there are bound to be delays out of the gate; how could this company not address as many issues as possible beforehand?

Crews should have been poring over route maps ahead of time in a bid to familiarize themselves with the changes.

One fellow watched as crews made pickups along his street and then watched as they skipped right by his own house. After alerting them to the missed pickup, the crew noted his address and then indicated that this fellow should call 311, the hotline for city issues. Why wouldn’t they just back up and grab his garbage?

Growing pains, indeed.

As per the Union - Garbage collection is a very difficult job. That's why garbage collectors need to make up to $95,000/year. So let's give the new guys a few years to master this complicated skill like we did for the Unionized workers. I don't mind having my garbage pick up delayed by a day or two - so long as we don't have strikes and I have to wait 2 hours to drop off my garbage at a depot while strikers make my life miserable.

@Joe Blow Mr. Blow are you being sarcastic when you say it must be a very difficult job?
I'm not sure how my back would feel after a long day and 5 days a week.
