Convenient Access to Beer
Posted 7/25/2012 9:00:00 AM

John Oakley returns Tuesday, August 7th. In the meantime...

A petition to allow beer and wine to be sold in convenience stores across Ontario will be presented today at Queen's Park. Over a hundred thousand people across the province say it's about time for beer and wine to be sold in convenience stores.

Perhaps this change is necessary, considering the alcohol retailing system hasn't had major changes since it was implemented 85 years ago.

Is this move for the convenience of the consumer or a cash grab for store owners? Will this make it easier for minors to access alcohol?

No for minors but the problem is Premier dad won't let this happen because all the LCBO workers are union people who voted him in.Why do you think the price is so high in stores.Beer stores all union, same thing. If the convenience stores could buy from anywere like the states,we might be able to buy a 24 for $20.A 40 pounder for $23.I say go for it.Ron.

Booze is expensive because of taxes not all because of the LCBO. On the other hand the LCBO is a money loser but thats ok because it protects union jobs and useless bureaucracy. The private sector can sell booze more efficiently because they would have to compete with other stores. Its sad that we don't have access to products made in Canada because the LCBO tut tut's our head and says we don't need that. End the monopoly, cut government spending and let the private sector deal with real business since the government has no business being in business! The govy would still collect the taxes with no cost to them, sounds like a no brainer.

I was at the liquor store at Mill rd and Burnhamthorpe. There were 2 lineups . One line was moving and my line was not. After 5 minutes of waiting I asked the clerk if the beer was free after waiting 5 minutes in line ? A supervising clerk responded by saying

"if you don't like the service go somewhere else"

So I dropped the handful of beer cans onto a display and exited the store.

Just a few years ago we were watching the long food lineups in the former soviet union. Look around now at most of the retail store outlets such as the liquor , beer, Wallymart , Zellers, Cdn tire, grocery etc - long waiting lines everywhere . So has the retail experience advanced or regressed to the soviet system levels ? We have been conditioned to accept this new"" wait your turn"" standard.

Can someone please explain to me why imported beer shipped from Europe is less expensive than locally produced beer and the volume size is smaller than 500ml.

I would accept a limited and cautious retail distribution which will no doubt affect the LCBO - Brewers Retail oligopoly. The Gov will make sure that the convenience store prices will be higher the oligopoly price levels to protect their own interests.
