Two Days, Two Shootings
Posted 7/18/2012 8:58:00 AM

Another shooting in Toronto last night, this time in the west end of the city. A man was shot dead on a soccer pitch in the Jane & Eglinton area.

Along with the Danzig Street shooting that happened Monday evening; several folk are up in arms about the safety of Toronto and what needs to be done to curb the violence.

It’s a convoluted solution to be sure. One of the first things that should be done is increasing the penalties for those who commit gun crimes. Also, gun related crimes should be bumped up to the top of the courtroom list. The clogged legal system needs to do triage as a hospital does with patients. More serious crimes need to be put in front of a judge more quickly than a parking ticket offense.

One of the reasons the legal system is so bogged down is because people aren’t afraid of the punishments involved; especially when that case may not go to trial for eighteen months or longer.

These two moves might be a good start to finding a solution, but as law abiding citizens, we really do need to speak up and voice our outrage. Too long have we lived with the reputation of being an ‘oh, well, it’s not my problem’ type of society.

I don’t think I have heard this much hand wringing since we were trying figure-out what Quebec wants.
Everyone is looking at this issue as if they were arm-chair social workers. Let’s keep the kids busy, give them a male role model or let’s give them more opportunities to succeed in the work force. We are all missing the point.
Our social tribulations all follow from a lucrative business opportunity that is protected and enabled by government. Without the opportunity to make money in amounts beyond what these young people could ever expect in a legit job, the entire infrastructure of gang crime would collapse.
Gangs are franchise organizations that are designed to distribute contraband. Their only competition is other gangs, since the law is inadvertently protecting their market by restricting entry. This competition naturally leads to inflated profits and violent turf wars.
We have created hundreds of “Henry Hills” that scoff at the losers trying to make it by traditional means. These young people are savvy to the reality of the street and just laugh at the do-gooders who build them basketball courts or setup social clubs. We have created a breeding ground for Good Fellas.
The answer as always means a return to personal responsibility. First we must respect these mobsters for who they are. They are people taking advantage of an opportunity we have made available to them. Our only course of action is to remove the artificially high income prospects from them by undermining their market.
One would have thought that with all the precedents that prohibition undermines a functioning society, we would have banished it by now. But it is still there wreaking havoc. We must accept that individuals bear responsibility for their actions and must be sovereign decision makers on all matters that don’t violate the rights of others. We are the people who decide to buy drugs – we don’t want the government to take that decision away or to mitigate the consequences of bad decisions.
No amount of social infrastructure imposed by government can compete with the money and image of participating in the contraband economy. We must have the courage and respect for individuals to repeal prohibition in any form to stop this insanity.

One thing that always gets me, is politicians and what not always thinking more laws, new laws, harder/tougher punishments is going to change people. Criminals in general aren't concerned with laws, how many time will they talk about banning guns, or banning bullets? Really? that's the only thing they can think of? illegal guns are illegal guns, banning legal guns, or any guns, isn't going to stop a gun runner from smuggling guns into the country, it's not going to stop gang members from obtaining illegal guns by illegal means...

One problem is our politicians are so out of touch with the realities of city streets they represent, living in their mansions and living off their pensions... City Politicians aren't in any way equipped to deal with the cost of paying for the police force, let alone solved the crime problem... Provincial governments don't really sincerely care about it... Federally, they are too oblivious to local problems... The Canadian Government is part of the problem in itself. TOO busy importing votes than trying to create a solution to our numerous problems..

As much as we place the blame on everybody else, the solution starts within our own state of mind. If we continue to see it as somebody else's problem nothing will ever be accomplished. One person can only do so much, but thousands of One persons can accomplish much more, and create a much more positive outlook for our young people..

I have seen it happen, heard about it a lot, and it has happened to me as well. When companies hire young people they make many of their screening decisions based on the address on the resume, among other things of course, but it's such a shame that companies would think in such a way and allow themselves to miss out on the potential so many talented and intelligent young people.

There are so many problems that have lead us to where we are today, hiring processes barely scratches the surface. We often blame the actions of youth on their parents, or lack thereof... community housing, etc.. it has come down to calling just about everything gang related, seems like an escape to me sometimes. I am starting to think that when the media/news reports a shooting in a "Priority" neighborhood, GANG RELATED=BLACK.

They want to blame the smuggling of guns and drugs on Native Territories near the border or that straddle the border, White people blame immigrants, Black people blame police racial profiling, Police blame the gangs, gangs go about their business while all this is going on and nothing is getting done. I've heard many times this week, that tougher/longer prison sentences for gun crimes will keep these criminals off the street, etc. I don't just think(I KNOW) jails are a breeding and recruiting territory for the people you locked up last time... gangs in particular grow exponentially when they all go to the same prison at the same time, and with a lack of prison facilities,. and many closing there's not enough space to separate them. That's the adult system. The Young offender system has been falling apart for years, and since the Y.C.J.A. came into effect it has gotten much much worse... group homes and programming and after care, etc... all gone. treatment is slowly disappearing. Sentencing guidelines have changed to keep young people out of jail by giving them house arrest or community supervision with no programming(Supervision) at all. Youth Records keep kids out of schools whether you think so or not.

If you go back 10-15 years when the Y.O.A. was still in effect. people complained all the time, but they had systems in place that helped alleviate overcrowding, etc..
Young offenders were held in pre-trial custody for a time, until bail or sentencing in a secure JAIL, then sentenced, sometimes to a longer term jail or to open Custody Group homes, those that went to Open custody had the opportunity to make a change and given the chance to prove themselves through programming and treatment. The ones that were successful remained in contact for what was called after-care, in either housing for treatment, or community group homes designed to Help re-integrate them back into the community by paying rent and holding a job for a time until they could support themselves. This is what the entire Youth system was based around, treatment & Rehabilitation, and with a few exceptions it worked.

SINCE, YCJA these treatment custody group homes have been turned into temporary holding for pre-trial custody. Treatment has virtually disappeared overnight.... The GTA has ONE dedicated Secure Youth Facility, many of the group homes have been closed and sold off to build condos, etc.. agencies that once did all their business by helping young offenders get their act together, are in decline... it's a sad state that will take 20-30 years to actually get back to where it was 10-15 years ago.

I liked the comment about mandatory Military service, if they could work it into being a part of High School, it might do better at crime prevention and make it a requirement for new citizens as well. High School is the time in a young person's life when everything changes, especially the early years and the transition time beforehand. if they don't have the structure and the discipline, they get bored, simply put but a huge factor in becoming involved in the legal system. Our current population of young people is most likely the bordest in our recent history. So if we don't prepare NOW, be ready for far worse and hardened criminals sooner than later.

@REDBROWN2011 The only thing about forcing military service is that some politicians would make decisions driving the at risk areas into more poverty to ensure a bigger millitary force.

Changing are immigration policy and keeping criminals off the streets with hard labor camps is the best way to prevent crimes in the long run. Stricter gun rules is a waste of time and money and does nothing.
Are war hero’s who died for this country would feel they died in vain if they new how Canada turn out.

@ChrisL_41 How many of the people involved with these past shootings were immigrants? HOW MANY??

      Do your homework goof.

I agree with Adam Vaughan with this......let's ban bullets because it's not the fault of the person using the bullets but the bullet itself? Hey, Adam since we are at it how about banning public housing since a high percentage of gang members live there and learn their skills there?....it's not the fault of the person living in public housing....but public housing itself for lending itself to be a training ground for future gang members or drug dealers etc.

@Joe Blow Good news Mr. Blow!

Ford's already selling off public housing and spent last week voting (soley) against a lot of the programs. To bad he's about to realise thwey are an important part of protecting at risk youth.

So yeah everythings pretty much been banned, except low brow knuckle dragging internet buffoons still supporting this sinking ship of a mayor we have - but hey someone has got to campaign for the guy right? You on his payroll or does he pay you in plastic bags.

@Joe Blow Why don't we just ban bad immigrants?

Political correctness will most likely prevent you from posting this blog, but here goes...Joe Blow is one of the few that gets it...He did not go far enough in explaining the real problem. The problem is the gun culture in the Black community. When you hear of a shooting in the city what is the first thing you think of?.. I think its from another Black male. Statistics will prove I am correct. The police will give the story about their investigation and when they will not say the description of the suspect, you just know its another Black male involved in a gun crime. If they were looking for a white suspect, that information would be right up front and immediate. The mentality of the black community in the city is...The bigger the gun, the bigger the man...To stop this criminal gun play, the city has to demand something like life sentences for any gun crime...LIFE MEANING YOUR NATURAL TIME ON THIS PLANET.. Liberals, are you listening? Probably not

@MichaelC_17 If the first thing you think of when you hear shooting is black male then yes there is a problem. Maybe some people would think that is racist, but you had the balls to admit your prejudice and maybe we should just leave it at that.

Maybe Ford should try to involve the black community in solving some of these problems.

Maybe he should just ask you because you seem to be such an export on the subject.

Maybe that's the problem - Ford's trolling the internet for answers. I could just see him now googling "How to stop gun crime in Toronto". HA!

I love this lefty term "at risk youth" - these people are not pets! Give them some respect by letting them know what our expectations of a civilized person are and let them pay the full consequences if they F-up.
Enticed by the huge income of working in the contraband black market many men are willing to risk everything to get rich. In the name of humanity we have to bring these people back into society by repealing prohibition laws. Its the money earned here that has decimated Black families and cause the death of countless individuals. The government must get rid of laws that treat people like wards of the state and let them take responsibility for their actions. Outlawing drugs, guns and sex have provided a protected market for organized crime - Time to do something about it. Treat people like adults and they will respond like adults - Freedom and the inherent responsibility that comes with it is the answer.

@Burton4Freedom What commie CBC documentry did you watch to come to the conclusion that only men are husslin' in the contraband black market to get rich? Or did you just read that off a 50 cent movie poster?

Never heard of a old white man doing anything he can for money? How about a jewish man - I'm surprised their stereotypical greed hasn't propelled them to violence. Don't even get me started on the women - they are only in it for the money (I mean if you're going to stereotype, right?)

If you were really from Toronto you would know that these neighbourhoods are black, brown, asian and so on. Any kid can fall to the wrong side of the tracks. By the time he's an adult with a gun in his hand - it's too late.

If you were a parent you would understand the sympathies of most Toronto people pleading for better social programs. Not a lefty liberal thing - they are a good resource for the proper socialization of children - it's a good parenting thing.

If you really cared about Toronto you would want to do everything you can to make sure these at risk kids (who are AT RISK of becoming criminals) you would want to make sure these kids have a way out: a job, a role model, someone that looks up to them; an area where they can go to for help, a safe place to learn and get an education.

These are Canadian values - not black and white and not right of left - it's a Canadian thing to want better for yourself and your neighbour.
