Free Or Fee?
Posted 7/5/2012 8:17:00 AM

The city has dropped the mandatory bag ‘tax’ yet some stores are still charging customers a nickel apiece.

All these stores maintain that they introduced the five cent charge as a sustainability initiative that happened to coincide with the city’s introduction of the largely despised fee.

Now that the fee is no longer mandatory, will you change your shopping habits to avoid those stores who continue to nickel (but not dime) their customers?

Or have you already made the switch to reusable bags, thereby negating the need to boycott any retailer?

Too bad Miller blew it in the first place. All that "bag revenue" could & should have been collected for the overdue subway lines we desperately need, with ongoing revenue add every year to this ongoing project. That would add up to hundreds of $millions, to substantially offset the costs! Instead, the clowns downtown never bothered to channel it into a dedicated fund for transit, and now they've banned the bag altogether, leaving customers stuck holding the bag for the extra charges anyway! And let's not forget the HST on top of the nickel so McSquinty can hose & screw us too! On principle I won't pay for bags anymore & will leave the groceries or other merchandise at the counter of any store that keeps charging for them. Is there ANY decency or good old fashioned customer service left in this city? Those are the ones I'll give my business to. I have no use for most of this dysfunctional clown council and feel bad for Mayor Ford having to clean up decades of city messes and transit delays for over 30 years now! This is why Toronto has lost its status as a once great, world class city.

The stores uses the 5 cent funds themselves. They make a political contributions and get to write it off on their bottom line. While we smucks are letting them do it. I went to a big box store, bought about 30 items which I transferred from my basket to the belt to be scanned...when she asked me if I would like a bag - I said no - please get me someone who can carry it out to my car. She said they can't. I complained - saying I don't want to put more plastic into the environment (5 cents or not) and for her to get the manager. After some back in forth with the manager, he offered me a bag for free which I said no thank you, and if they were really concerned about the environment they will carry it out for me as it will not leave a carbon footprint. In an attempt to scan me of 5cents I got them to pull an employee off the floor for 5 minutes costing them more. The guy behind me shook my hand congratulating me on my stand.

FYI - companies like Home Depot will not allow you to take their hand held baskets out of the store for you to use to carry your merchandise to your car. Also, in order to minimize the potential E Coli contamination of reusable bags, why isn't there a swap program. I bring in my dirty METRO bag, for example, and they give me a clean one. Whether I was it or they do we are still using tones of electricity to heat the water to the point where the E Coli is killed. For that HUGE advertising on those bags, and the fact I use them at other stores....they should pay me to use it !!!!!

Saw a sigh in Loblaws that read "we will continue to charge $0.05 for bags despite the new bag law" or something liek that. Really makes it sound like they are doing us a favour.
