One (Transit) City
Posted 6/27/2012 8:34:00 AM

John Oakley returns Tuesday, July 2nd! In the meantime...

TTC Chair Karen Stintz is scheduled to unveil a transit plan for the city of Toronto.

Funding of the project relies on upping property taxes. Not by much; it begins with an annual amount of $45 and will increase over four years to a cap of $180.

Toronto’s property taxes would still be among the lowest in the region with the $180 taken in to account.

This is also a thirty year plan, so don’t expect that $180 levy to go away.

Aside from the déjà vu you might experience as this looks an awful lot like the plan for Transit City, would you be willing to fund this project via your property taxes?

It looks interesting, but as stated, much like the Transit City plan. It's a good strategy for the long term, BUT... As many homeowners within The City of Toronto, don't even use Transit, I expect a huge fight... Renter's Ride from my experiences. After the first four years of the NEXT TAX, expect it will go up exponentially over the next 30 + years.

If they were smart, they would partner up with the surrounding cities and create a real Plan for the next 30 years. Create a GTA TTC, or metrolinx Transit system... Stretch it out to at least Halton region and up to Newmarket, out to Durham because by the time this ONE City plan ever gets completed, the population will have tripled...

Toronto Transit, especially Subways expansion, is 50 years behind and already 30 years late to begin upgrading... so in 30 years just imagine how far behind we may be. New York City had a Fully functioning subway system ever expanding and upgrading, even before Canada reached Confederation... we built the Bloor line and the Yonge line, and stopped for half a century.

@REDBROWN2011 The Property Taxes in the 905 are already double what the 416 pays, until this discrepancy is resolved the 416 folks should not be looking to the Provice or Feds (basically the rest of us) for any more money for Transit.

Why should the rest of the country pony up so the 416 can keep their Property Taxes so low???

When we pay a similar amount of Property Taxes, then we can talk.

      Period.

First off, who uses public transit in T.O.? I don't. Public transit is mainly for the people who live in that city. Pony up T.O. residents. Living in Burlington I rarely go to Toronto and when I do I NEVER use the transit system. Why should I pay for your public transit with my tax dollars? Maybe when your turkey mayor is gone I may have a different attitude!

Weren't we told during the Subways Subways Subways debacle that subways cost about $1 Billion per km?

Something doesn't add up with this plan. I am confident you will all be paying way more than $180 per person, this is a tax scam bait and switch!!! Though Toronto is severely undertaxed and should be paying more for their transit system. No money for Toronto transit should be coming from the Province or the Feds.

The functional mismanagement and lack of accountability in this city makes me want to leave.
