Hospital Board Members Offered Swine Flu Shots

Members of at least four hospitals boards in Toronto have been offered the swine flu vaccine, and while one doctor says he now regrets that decision, others say it's the right thing to do.

Board members at Toronto's Mount Sinai hospital were offered the shot last week, when health officials were urging that priority groups go to the front of the line.

Dr. Donald Low, chief microbiologist at the hospital, says he made a mistake in offering the board members the H1N1 shot on Oct. 26, the first day it became available in Toronto.

He says 65 people,  including doctors, staff, volunteers and board members got the shot, and 15 of them would have been in the high-priority category.

Dr. Bob Bell, president of Toronto's University Health Network, says the shot is being offered to everyone who works at the network's three hospitals, including its board members and executives.

He says they're all essential in the effective operation of the network's hospitals, which include the Toronto General, Toronto Western and Princess Margaret hospitals at a time of crisis.
