Jim Brennan's goal in 47th minute kept Toronto FC's Major League Soccer playoff hopes alive Saturday with a 1-0 victory over Real Salt Lake at BMO Field.
After winning its final home game of the regular-season schedule, Toronto has one road game left and must win that and have other favourable results to reach the playoffs for the first time in its three years in the league.
Both teams were on the outside fighting to climb into a playoff spot. Real Salt Lake entered the game with 37 points, one more than Toronto. The New England Revolution entered the weekend holding the final playoff position with 38 points.
Brennan knocked home the rebound on a half-volley after Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando came out to block Chad Barrett's shot. Barrett was set up by a pass from Emmanuel Gomez.
Toronto goalkeeper Brian Edwards turned aside Robbie Findley in the 72nd minute on a dangerous chance. Fabian Espindola knocked a shot just wide in the 80th after out-running Toronto's defence.
