Dozens of francophone schools in New Brunswick have applied for an exemption to O Canada after the province's education department mandated that schools that did not want to play the national anthem each day develop other activities to promote patriotism. In some parts of the province, the rule has resulted in more anthem singing, education administrators say, since there was nothing to force schools to do it before.

Shelley Carroll, the city budget chief who is considering a bid for the mayoralty, suggested yesterday that Toronto should levy a municipal sales tax. We will soon be the only city of its size in North America that doesn’t have a sales tax,” Councillor Carroll (Don Valley East) told a breakfast discussion at the National Club. “We are missing an opportunity to build it into the HST.” Should Toronto just increase property taxes, instead of taking away pieces here and there?

Police are warning business owners and employees to keep an eye on their PIN pads after about 100 people were ripped off by a new high-tech scam. The new scam involves Bluetooth transmitters that are now being used by criminals to swipe bank card numbers and passwords via wireless means.

Penelope Trunk, who describes herself as an author, blogger and entrepreneur, wrote: “I’m in a board meeting. Having a miscarriage. Thank goodness, because there’s a f------up 3-week hoop-jump to have an abortion in Wisconsin.” Commenters have accused her of heartlessness, and a CNN interviewer asked if she had “no shame”. However, Miss Trunk argues that the real issue is the three-week wait for an clinic appointment in Wisconsin which would have forced her to travel to Chicago, Illinois, for her abortion.
