An inmate at Toronto's Don Jail will appear in court Dec. 1 to face a charge of assaulting another prisoner.
Police say a prisoner was assaulted during the lunch hour on Nov. 11 and remains in hospital in critical condition.
Jason Gardner, 25, is charged with aggravated assault.
The jail is a holding facility for short-term prisoners who are generally either awaiting trial or sentencing.
This beating came just five days after another inmate was beaten to death, after an alleged dispute over a bag of potato chips.
Three men have been charged with first-degree murder in that case.
